Official website of Wake Green AFCWAKE GREEN A.F.C NEWSWake Green AFC – a provider of sportingand social facilities in the local communityhttp://www.wakegreenafc.co.uk/ Bill Young 1933 -2010 Bill Young, aged 76, President of Wake Green Amateur Football Club died peacefully at home on the morning of Wednesday 20 January. Bill joined Wake Green in 1975 when, as Secretary of Leafield Boys Club, It was one of the best decisions in Wake Green’s history that we agreed to such an association between the two clubs. The association led to the most successful period in Wake Green’s history, both on and off the field, during the 1980’s and 1990’s and many players that joined from Leafield are still with Wake’s today. Not long after joining Wake Green Bill added to his role as Secretary of Leafield Boys Club to become Secretary of Wake Green. During his time as Secretary Bill engineered our move to, and the development of, our current premises “The Holloway” in Drawbridge Road. To help integrate “his boys” into open age football Bill took on the role of 4th team manager adding to his list of activities and responsibilities. The jobs of 2nd team manager and 1st team manager followed and was successful in winning the Premier Division 4 years on the trot 1988 to 1992. Bill subsequently succeeded Max Holloway as Chairman then President and has now followed him to the big playing field in the sky – they will be arguing now about what we should be doing with the pitches. Bill devoted a huge amount of time over the last 20 years to the Acorns Children’s Hospice and was a former Chairman and Trustee of the Hospice. He was also an active participant in several other charitable organisations. He was a keen golfer and was a member for many years of Ladbrook Park Golf Club in Solihull. Bill leaves behind his wife of over 50 years Rosemary, children David, Graeme, Stuart and Sheila as well 9 grandchildren. A true gentleman of the highest integrity who gave his time freely to support his many activities and interests he will be truly missed by all those who knew him. The family have requested that instead of flowers those that wish to could make a donation to The Acorns Children’s Hospice c/o Dyson Richards Funeral Directors, 457 Stratford Road, Shirley, Solihull B90. The family would also like to express their gratitude for the countless messages of sympathy and support that they have received. They have been most touching and much appreciated.

he suggested a link up between the clubs so that “his boys” could progress to open age football when they became too old for boys football.
